A Anecdote of the truly
As a customer,we so often when choosing a menu or wine, have the urgent desire to escape the monotany of the everyday. A cook often feels the same way while preparing dishes. “Many moons ago” on a wine tasting excursion,I had an unusual experience. Looking for a hotel room in an old part of Bordeaux,I discovered a special restaurant in the Alley de Tourny. Between elegant shops and bistros there was a sign that read “ L’Entrecote” first floor. “Single?” asked the Maitre d’, rather disappointed and lead me to the most awkward and remote table in the whole restaurant. After I was seated and awaiting the menu card a “Garçon” came by and asked me “ Red or white?” “Red, of course!” I answered. Swiftly the bottle was uncorked, no label nor year of vintage were visible. Just house wine no explanation necessary. No menu, no opportunity to order. People coming and going. Then, all of a sudden, it was my turn. Breathtaking! There it was in front of me, a new york strip presliced and overbroiled with “Café de Paris” and even the French fries were crispy. Enjoying my meal, feeling a little like a millionaire, I started to note the impressions on some odd wine list. Later that night,in the slightly run down “Grand Hotel de Bordeaux” half awake and a little tipsy, I started to complete my notes. Spices, ingredients and some fantasy. Some weeks later, I began to compose my “Beurre Café de Paris” and again was puzzled. How much of this and how much of that? The main ingredients remain, prime quality of meat and butter. So, come and share some of my unforgettable memories of France.
Yours truly
